Updated: Apr 11

Your Glow Up journey begins with understanding hyperpigmentation and the importance of sunscreen's role in preventing skin discoloration. Dermatologists unanimously declare sunscreen as the primary tool in the battle against skin discoloration.

Let's break down the complexities of hyperpigmentation and the crucial role sunscreen plays in managing it. Let's Glow! ✨

What is Hyperpigmentation?

Simply put, it’s uneven pigmentation in skin tone where certain areas become darker than the rest. They usually appear as patches or dark spots that can vary in size and color. It’s a common condition that doesn’t discriminate—meaning it affects people of all ages—and skin types. These unwelcome spots pop up when a trigger causes your skin to produce extra melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. Dark spots are like uninvited visitors who have overstayed their welcome!

Causes: Understanding the Hyperpigmentation and Sunscreen Relationship

The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery points to various triggers, including medications, inflammation (such as rash or acne), trauma (like cuts or burns), and the most frequent culprit—prolonged sun exposure. A study in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences solidifies the link between chronic sun exposure and adverse skin consequences, including photo-aging and skin cancers.

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Geeta Yadav explains

Skin produces more melanin when exposed to UV to shield itself from damage. However, excessive sun exposure accelerates melanin production, leading to the formation of those dreaded dark spots.

Protected Skin is Always In

Consider sunscreen a non-negotiable in the arsenal against hyperpigmentation. The American Academy of Dermatology confirms its role in protecting, preventing, and aiding in the clearance of current dark spots. However, effectiveness hinges on daily and correct application.

Dr. Yadav advises tire body. reapplying about a half a teaspoon worth of sunscreen to the face (the equivalent of the length of two fingers) and neck, respectively, and the equivalent of a shot glass of sunscreen to the explication every two hours, especially during activities like swimming or sweating, becomes essential for maintaining healthy skin. For makeup wearers, the option of powder sunscreen provides a convenient and non-disruptive alternative.

Choosing the Right Shield

When it comes to sunscreen, there are two main types: chemical and mineral.

Chemical sunscreens contain organic compounds that absorb UV rays and convert them into heat, while mineral sunscreens use natural minerals like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to create a physical barrier that reflects and scatters UV rays away from the skin. Both types offer unique benefits: chemical sunscreens tend to be lightweight, easy to apply, and blend seamlessly into the skin, making them ideal for daily wear and use under makeup.

On the other hand, mineral sunscreens are often preferred by those with sensitive skin or allergies, as they are less likely to cause irritation and offer immediate protection upon application. Understanding the differences between these two types of sunscreens allows individuals to choose the option that best suits their skin type and preferences, ensuring optimal protection against harmful UV rays.

Dr. Yadav emphasizes that the formula type (physical or chemical sunscreen) matters less than applying a sufficient amount. The choice between physical, which forms a coating on the skin to block the sun's rays, and chemical, which triggers a chemical reaction in the skin to prevent damage, boils down to personal preference.

Understanding SPF Numbers

Always opt for a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) numbers tell you how well a sunscreen protects against sunburn caused by UVB rays. The higher the SPF number, the longer it protects your skin. For example, SPF 30 means it takes 30 times longer to burn than if you weren't wearing sunscreen.

SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%, and SPF 100 blocks about 99%. SPF 30 is generally enough for daily use if applied correctly and reapplied as needed, especially after swimming or sweating.

Mineral sunscreens are my personal preference because i have sensitive skin, prone to allergies, (the wind blows and my skin becomes itchy….no seriously!) inflammation and occasional hyperpigmentation.

As a Skin Care Consultant, I like to recommend mineral sunscreens to my clients who, like me, deal with skin sensitivities. So I was thrilled when Mary Kay came out with a Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen. that Not only protects against the UVA and UVB rays, but also gives protection against blue light emitted from laptops and smartphones.

According to .Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Alexis Stephens, research studies show that those with richer more melanated skin tones are more prone to hyperpigmentation from visible (blue) light.

"Not only has it been shown that the dark spots stay longer but we're more prone to developing more pigmented areas whenever we are exposed to visible light."

Sun Spot Solutions: Addressing Existing Hyperpigmentation and Sunscreen

While sunscreen defends against future hyperpigmentation, addressing existing dark spots requires a nuanced approach.

Sunscreen, though essential, cannot single-handedly fade pre-existing discoloration. Instead, additional interventions are necessary to combat these stubborn spots

Hyperpigmentation Helpers

In the arsenal against existing dark spots, chemical exfoliants and retinoids emerge as Powerful allies. These skincare ingredients boast the ability to resurface the skin, gradually fading the appearance of discoloration over time. Chemical exfoliants, such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), work by gently dissolving dead skin cells and promoting cellular turnover, revealing fresher, more evenly toned skin beneath.

Caution Regarding Physical Exfoliation for Women of Color

While chemical exfoliants offer a gentle yet effective approach to addressing existing dark spots, the same cannot always be said for physical exfoliation methods. Physical exfoliants, such as scrubs or abrasive brushes, physically remove dead skin cells through friction. For women of color, particularly those with darker skin tones, caution is advised when it comes to physical exfoliation..

The Risk of Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)

Physical exfoliation, such as microdermabrasion, particularly when performed aggressively, can inadvertently worsen hyperpigmentation in individuals with deeper skin tones. this higher risk is due to the possibility of small skin injuries (trauma), leading to inflammation and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). PIH manifests as darkening of the skin in areas of previous trauma or irritation, further complicating the quest for even skin tone.

Alternative Approaches for Women of Color

Given the potential risks associated with physical exfoliation, Women of color may opt for gentler alternatives to address existing dark spots. Chemical exfoliants, such as glycolic acid or lactic acid, offer a milder yet effective means of promoting skin renewal without the risk of exacerbating hyperpigmentation. Additionally, incorporating brightening agents, such as niacinamide or licorice extract, into skincare routines can further aid in fading dark spots while minimizing the risk of adverse reactions.

Product Recommendations:

This innovative formula combines gentle polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) to exfoliate the skin's surface gently. F.A.Q.'s

Q: How does SPF numbers work on darker skin considering that the skin darkens more readily than burning?

A:  SPF works the same for all skin tones, but darker skin can still be damaged by the sun. SPF tells you how well sunscreen protects against sunburn. Even though darker skin doesn't burn easily, it can still get damaged by the sun's rays. So, it's important for everyone, including those with darker skin, to use sunscreen with SPF to stay protected. This helps prevent damage like premature aging, skin cancer, hyperpigmentation, and PPD which is persistent pigment darkening or delayed tanning. PPD refers to the prolonged long-lasting darkening or increased pigmentation of the skin that can take weeks to several months to fully fade even after the initial tan fades. Sunscreen is important for maintaining an even radiant skin tone and keeping your skin healthy.
